National BME Mental Health Network
2007 Conference - 24/25 September, Manchester Conference Centre
5th Annual conference of the National Black & Minority Ethnic Mental Health Network
Issues affecting the relationship between front line mental health workers and service users and their carers and families.
Background to the conference
This year’s conference will explore the issues facing mental health professionals delivering services on the front line - in hospital wards, through outreach services, in community based projects, housing and a range of other social services. How are they, and the services they deliver, viewed by service users? How do professionals regard the services they provide and the way in which they are perceived by colleagues and service users? How can they be better supported? Do they see any link between their role and Delivering Race Equality, the core plank of government policy on BME mental health?

The conference

The two day agenda will include:

• A critique of Delivering Race Equality by Professor Sashi Sashidharan
• A panel session, facilitated by Dr Albert Persaud, featuring front line mental health professionals, a service user and carer providing expert personal testimony
• Four parallel sessions on key issues of training, the Choice Agenda, refugees and asylum seekers, and relationship issues between service providers and service users
• An exploration of the models for service user participation by Dominic Makuvachuma-Walker, Catch-A-Fiya
• Results of a trial which went beyond prescription drugs in treating depressed women of Pakistani origin by Dr Waquas Waheed, Lancashire NHS Trust/University of Manchester
